Strength, Movement, Awareness

Strength, stability, flexibility, movement patterns and skills, and mindfulness. What is one without the others? What are you developing in your practice, and are your workouts making you feel and move better?

Epic integrates a tri-focus on strength, movement, and awareness. Through mindful exercise, we become stronger and more capable. Through conscious conditioning, we adapt to all forms of challenge and develop embodied problem-solving. We move more fluidly with increased confidence. We know our bodies more subtly with greater ability to distinguish our body’s signals, warnings, pains and pleasures.

Yogic Warrior Conditioning

kb-crowYogic Warrior Conditioning® is a comprehensive health and fitness approach combining Yoga, Functional Training, Conditioning and Restorative Techniques in a way that creates usable strength, develops effortless movement, and deepens awareness of body, mind and spirit.

It’s mindful approach to natural movement and strong focus on awareness and creativity transform our tissues and nervous system to create a balance between improved health & fitness, reduced stress, and enhanced coordination & clarity. This is what is now called Conscious Movement and Conditioning, a new breed beyond traditional fitness.

Importantly, Yogic Warrior Conditioning® makes exercise more than exercise, and helps launch one’s yoga practice off the mat.

Who are you?

Are you a yogi? An athlete? A weekend warrior? Are you recovering from injuries or are you looking to simply make exercise more rewarding on many more levels? Epic provides more than just muscle work and cardiovascular exercise. Epic challenges you with more than just intervals. Epic asks more from you than just to follow the leader. You are the leader.

Your workout becomes Epic when you bring your whole self to your activity.

Yoga brought the mind-body connection to the mainstream, and “functional training” has made huge strides in the fitness industry in bringing a whole-body mindset to exercise. Yet, there is more available to us through many systems of movement.

Epic brings together the leading edge of exercise with the intention of a yoga practice, based on core principles of change and transformation. It opens your heart and mind to a stronger, more graceful you. With Epic, you work with the essence of multi-dimensional, multi-use movement found throughout life, building intuitive skill with mindful intensity, repetition and rhythm while taking mind-body seriously and using movement purposefully to discover in yourself what there is to discover.

Your journey begins with you

Why are you here? Where are you going? With Epic, you will make changes and take on challenges. Our experience is that the clearer you are on certain questions, the more success you will create for yourself. As Lao-Tzu said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

How Epic Works

The Epic Workout

Each Epic Workout session challenges and develops your foundation of strength, reservoir of movement, and skills of awareness. You practice and master traditional yoga asana and also the functional movements of pushing, pulling, running, lunging, jumping, balancing, crawling, inverting, kicking and punching and more.

The Epic Challenge

Each Epic Challenge is a 28-day journey that you complete on your own or with others. Each day is charted out and guides you comprehensively to raise and meet your own evolving standards. 28 days gives you the time to commit to making new habits and seeing what happens to your body when you really focus.

Each Challenge is made up of a 7-day set of learning with practices and challenges which, once completed, you repeat and evolve four times. Each week builds off the last and is always different, always harder, and always doable. You progress to new challenges as your body adapts and feel stronger and more confident with the basic Epic movements, and advance to meet new standards.

Trainings and Workshops

We work with trainers, physical therapists, dancers, and movers and shakers and teachers of all kinds to introduce the concepts of conscious movement, conscious conditioning, full-spectrum fitness, and integral exercise. This is where the fitness industry is going. The focus of these workshops includes:

  • connecting our roles as teachers and coaches to both our client’s purpose and the world’s purpose
  • learning to focus on the essence of human movement in addition to the science of movement
  • taking Mind-Body seriously to achieve greater benefits in our clients and ourselves

We are on The Hero’s Journey

Many Epic structures are designed around The Hero’s Journey, a description of a basic pattern found in many narratives from around the world. This universal pattern was described by Joseph Campbell in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). Campbell’s insight was that important myths from around the world which have survived for thousands of years, all share a fundamental structure. This fundamental structure contains a number of stages, including:

  • A call to adventure, which the hero has to accept or decline
  • A road of trials, regarding which the hero succeeds or fails
  • Achieving the goal or “boon”, which often results in important self-knowledge
  • A return to the ordinary world, again as to which the hero can succeed or fail
  • Applying the boon, in which what the hero has gained can be used to improve the world

“A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”

- Introduction to The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Campbell

What is Exercise?

The Epic Workout is integrally informed fitness. This means that many perspectives of what fitness is, what exercise can be, are welcomed. Our bodes and what we do with them have an extraordinary history and significant potential.

Exercise. To exercise actually means to bring into action. When we exercise, we bring into action our ancestral memories. Our bodies remember that we lived in trees and forests. We need to crawl and climb and run if we are to develop our intellectual, emotional and spiritual capacities. We did not emerge from an austere iceberg of a distant planet, but in the particularities of this Earth and its forests. When we wander through the mountains, climbing and running, our bodies remember those deep patterns of behavior intrinsically tied to all that we are. We tend to think of exercise as losing weight, as trimming off the fat. But to exercise is to enable the body to remember its past, so that it can stretch out with all its intertwined powers of being and thought and reflection.
